Mount Maunganui, New Zealand

Precision surfing built through better decisions.

Ivorquellavessia brings together developing surfers, experienced wave-riders and competition-focused members. Coaching centres on wave reading, efficient paddling, positioning, board control and repeatable decision-making in real coastal conditions.

COACHING NOTE

The fastest progress comes from recognising the right wave early, then committing to a clear line.

Coaching framework

Build the skills that make every session more deliberate.

Our training pathway separates surfing into practical layers: movement on the board, positioning in the lineup, wave selection, take-off timing, trim, rail engagement and finishing control. Coaches then reconnect those layers in coached water sessions so members understand not only what to do, but when and why.

  • Clear progression goals for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers.
  • Small coaching groups with direct observations between waves.
  • Session plans adjusted to tide, wind, swell direction and ability mix.
  • Competition preparation that develops heat strategy without sacrificing style.

Club rhythm

More than a lesson: a repeatable week of surf development.

Members can use the club as a consistent structure around independent surfing. The aim is to create enough repetition for technique to settle while keeping every session connected to real conditions.

01

Technique sessions

Targeted coaching for take-offs, speed generation, bottom turns, cutbacks, finishing control and board positioning. Each session starts with one or two measurable priorities rather than an overloaded checklist.

02

Ocean awareness

Learn to read sets, channels, banks, wind effect and shifting peaks. Better awareness improves wave count, reduces wasted paddling and helps surfers position with greater confidence around others.

03

Competition practice

Timed mock heats teach priority awareness, score building, wave-count management and calm decision-making. The emphasis is on making smart choices under a clock, not simply surfing harder.

Competition pathway

Turn free-surf ability into controlled heat surfing.

Club events create a low-friction route into competition. Members learn how heats are run, how judging rewards committed surfing, how to manage time and how to review a result without letting one score define the whole performance.

1

Choose a division

Enter the division that matches age, board format and current competitive level. New competitors can ask the club team for guidance before registering.

2

Prepare with purpose

Use training sessions to practise starts, first-wave selection, backup-score building and end-of-heat decisions.

3

Compete and review

After the heat, focus on decisions that can be repeated or changed: positioning, wave quality, manoeuvre completion and use of time.

New Zealand beach and coastal surf line
Local knowledge

Train for the coastline you actually surf.

Mount Maunganui changes quickly. A clean morning peak can soften with tide or become less organised as local wind builds. Club sessions teach members to notice these changes early, alter positioning and choose equipment and objectives that suit the day.

That local awareness is useful beyond one beach. The same observation process—swell direction, period, wind, tide, crowd movement and bank shape—can be applied whenever a member surfs a new break.

Member perspective

Progress is easier to see when the process is clear.

Intermediate member

“The biggest change was not one manoeuvre. It was learning where to sit, which waves to leave and how to arrive at the take-off with more time.”

First-time competitor

“Mock heats made the clock feel normal. I stopped chasing every bump and started building a heat with two waves I actually wanted.”

Advanced squad

“The coaching is specific. One session might be entirely about finishing turns cleanly; the next is about using the first section to create speed.”
